WORLD WAR Z MOVIE'S DEPARTURE FROM MAX BROOK'S ZOMBIE NOVEL HAS SOME FANS SCREAMING EAT ME!
The World War Z film stars Brad Pitt, is reported to have been shot on a $125 Million dollar budget, and is to be the first in a trilogy. But the fan's focus isn't on the press junket, it's on the film's content. The film's trailers and press suggests a departure from the Max Brooks' novel and has some fans screaming heresy of doctrine! Many message boards have fans balking like a bunch of Klingons at a Kirk court trial. As divisive as this decision may have been it should be no surprise that producers took the creative license to change things a bit or much.
This practice has peeved many authors in the past, but this is what happens when a story is optioned in Hollywood. Many authors run this risk when their work is sold for screen adaptation. Still, an interesting viewpoint would be that once an author writes a book and publishes it, that book, his baby becomes in the heart of fans their property. They buy it, fall in love with it, and take ownership of it (I'm speaking metaphorically of course). Now to complicate matters, when that work is bought by the studios and changed this causes problems, because it's no longer the same thing. As a consumer, a filmmaker, and an author I have mixed feelings about this practice (who should I sympathize with?). The author, the filmmaker, the fans all have a vested interest, but at the end of the day the driving force behind the sale is the money and the ego of the author. We want our work to be seen, loved, and consumed. The studios obviously wants to make money from this creation. The fans want to be entertained. It's an interesting dilemma destined to repeat itself over and over again.
